Nicholas of Cusa

Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) was one of the most illustrious figures of the fifteenth century. Trained as a canonist, he first made his mark in political thought. Later, Nicholas became a papal envoy, a cardinal and an original speculative thinker. His ideas of learned ignorance, coincidence of opposites and enfolding / unfolding still attract attention today.

The American Cusanus Society, founded in 1983, promotes the study of Nicholas and his times. It holds sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University in May of each year, and it has held conferences at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and at the Catholic University of America.  [List of major publications of the Society.]

The Society also publishes a newsletter. It is affiliated with the Institute for Cusanus Research, University of Trier and the Japanese Cusanus Society.

In Remembrance of Morimichi Watanabe

Morimichi Watanabe, president emeritus of the American Cusanus Society, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 1, 2012 at his home in Port Washington, New York. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Kiyomi Watanabe, M.D., his son, Tsugumichi D. Watanabe of New York City, and a granddaughter, Izumi Watanabe.

He was a retired Professor of History and Political Science from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. He served as President of the American Cusanus Society from 1983-2008 and was also editor of the American Cusanus Society Newsletter from its debut in 1984 to the present. His research on the historical context of the life and political thought of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) set the standard for all work done in this field in the English language.
